Students admitted to the Program may choose to pursue the Ph.D. in one of two ways: (1) a Ph.D. in Ecology, through a curriculum of study administered by Program faculty; or (2) a Ph.D. in one of the participating departments, with a Certificate of Graduate Study in Ecology.

Departments and Divisions participating in the Program guarantee that any student admitted to the Program is automatically admissible for Ph.D. study in the Department/Division, should the student choose a faculty mentor with a primary appointment in that Department/Division. The Program may admit students to Certificate study in ecology without necessarily providing financial support if such individuals have been admitted for degree study in another Ph.D.-granting unit of the Graduate School.

Students may apply directly to the Program for admission, or alternatively, they may apply directly to one of the participating departments, which will then forward the applications of promising students who have expressed an interest in graduate training in ecology to the Program.
