In their first year, students enrolling in the
Graduate Program in Ecology must complete a 2-semester "core course" offered
by the Program's faculty. These courses are tentatively numbered UPE 301/302,
and are intended to introduce the student to current concepts and pressing
research problems in ecology, focusing on contributions by Duke faculty.
UPE 301 will focus on issues in population, community, and behavioral
ecology. UPE 302 will focus on issues in physiological ecology and ecosystem
analysis.
Within their first year of study, each student is required to select a
graduate advisor and form an advisory committee. Aside from the core courses,
the curriculum for each student is designed in consultation with the student's
graduate committee to best meet the needs of the proposed dissertation
research and to reflect the past academic experience of the student. The
minimum coursework consists of eight formal (i.e., not including graded
research and seminars) graduate-level courses for students in the program.
During their first year of residence, graduate students in the Program
are also encouraged to complete two or more short "rotations", each consisting
of a tutorial or a laboratory experience with a different faculty member
in the program. Typically, the duration of each rotation is about 12 weeks.
Throughout their participation in the Graduate Program in Ecology, students
are expected to attend a weekly research seminar, a series that will include
presentations by the Program's faculty and graduate students. Each student
will be expected to present a seminar in this series each year.
